LOS ANGELES - "Avatar", the fresco of science-fiction 3D, by Canadian James Cameron became the biggest success of all history of cinema, engulfing the record of "Titanic" by the same director.

  •    "Monday ‘Avatar’ officially surpassed ‘Titanic’ to become the most profitable film in the history of cinema in terms of entries in the halls, said Tuesday the studio 20th Century Fox.

The blockbuster, which took James Cameron ten years of work has raised 1.859 billion in revenue worldwide since its release, about six weeks ago, said the Hollywood studio.

The film beats "Titanic," released in 1997, which had collected 1.843 billion in 41 weeks of operations on the screens.

"Avatar" has cost 500 million dollars to its producers: 300 million to produce the film and 200 for promotion.

"It's official, the king of the world is once again the king of the world!", Commented to AFP Jeff Bock, analyst firm Exhibitor Relations, calling James Cameron, 55, "magician of cinema and master of art."

"As the ship itself, many thought that the record of Titanic at the box office was unsinkable. This is not the case," he added.

The film, seen as marking a watershed in the use of 3D technology, confirms the public's taste for these innovative visual sensations. According to Jeff Bock, approximately 72% of worldwide revenue came from rooms in 3D.

"Avatar" tells the story of Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington), a former Marine paralyzed sent on mission in faraway planet Pandora.

Via a machine built by man, he takes control of a biological being designed to blend into the body of the local population of people of Na'vi inside a tropical forest with bestiary incredibly rich.

His fate turned upside down when, through his "avatar", he falls in love with one of the blue creatures of the people of Na'vi. With a cantankerous doctor played by Sigourney Weaver, he helps then Na'vi to fight against U.S. troops ravaging the local ecosystem in search of valuable ore.

The film started with a bang the Hollywood awards season, winning two prestigious awards at the Golden Globe Awards: the prize for best dramatic film and best director trophy for James Cameron. This was expressed in part in Na'vi, the language created from scratch for the film by a linguist, receiving his prize.

These awards reinforce its status as favorite for the Oscars, where he will win more than 11 statues to beat "Titanic". The nominees should be announced next week, and prizes will be presented March 7.

"The themes of environmental protection, respect for life and desire for a peaceful world united moviegoers in the world," says 20th Century Fox.

The film, which broke the record box office in China, has already given its name to a mountain in the centre of the country. A top of the Hunan province, until now known as "the pillar of heaven and earth", was officially named "Mountain Hallelujah Avatar," said Monday the city of Zhangjiajie in a statement.
