Official opening of Algiers International Book Fair
ALGIERS, October 26, 2010 - The 15th International Book Fair of Algiers (Sila), was inaugurated Tuesday by Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, in the absence of Egyptian publishers whose arrival was uncertain after the cold that has marked the Last year relations between Algeria and Egypt.
- Some 460 publishers from 30 countries are participating in the show, which runs until November 6 on the main esplanade of the Olympic complex in Algiers. It will be open from Wednesday.
- "The Egyptian publishers did not come," told AFP the Communication Officer of Sila Benadouda Abdallah.
- Sila commissioner Smail Ameziane had denied in September 25 that there "had never be prohibition" of the Egyptian presence at the show and announced that the Egyptian books would be present in Sila.
- Algerian intellectuals living in Algeria, Europe and North America raised in a petition a "ban" taken, according to them by the commissioner after the incidents surrounding the football matches in November 2009 between Egypt-Algeria qualifiers for the World Cup- 2010.
- The crisis that arose after the match had taken on a diplomatic incident outside the embassy of Algerian in Cairo and the recall of ambassadors for consultations from Algeria in Cairo and Egyptian in Algiers in their respective countries.
- Switzerland is this year guest of honor at the fair, a landmark event in the cultural life of Algeria.
- She will present a bright and open more than 200 m2 exposures "Suisse Romande, land of the book" and " Switzerland Science " and a dozen authors, intellectuals, historical and cultural personalities. France is contributing with a dozen publishers.
- The Muslim religious book occupies traditionally an important place in this show, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors attracted by the affordable works exposed.
