Educational systems: Shanghai No. 1 in OECD world ranking
The Chinese city of Shanghai tops the "Pisa" rankings of the OECD on the achievements of pupils aged 15 in reading, mathematics and science, in which Asia is well placed, according to the results of this survey published Tuesday.
- The fourth edition of this survey of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), already conducted in 2000, 2003 and 2006, was conducted among 470,000 young people in 65 countries, including the 34 OECD members.
- The 2009 edition was more interested in student achievement in the field of "reading", but two other classifications have been made in mathematics and science.
- Many Asian countries are among the top ten: the metropolis of Shanghai, China's economic engine and "economic partner" of the OECD and which appears for the first time in this study, is leading the ranking in all three disciplines.
- It overtook Finland and South Korea who were the best in the 2006 PISA study.
- South Korea ranked second for writing (before Finland), 4th in mathematics and 6th in science. Hong Kong, Singapore, TaiwanJapan also ranked very highly. and
- "This success is explained by their education systems which combine quality and equity," said Eric Charbonnier, education expert at the OECD.
- Finland's system, which is praised by all specialists, remains at a good level: 3rd for writing, second in science and 6th in mathematics.
- Seven European countries show scores above the OECD average: the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Switzerland, Poland, Estonia, Iceland.
- Nine other countries are in the average OECD: United States, Sweden, Germany, Ireland, France, Denmark, United Kingdom, Hungary and Portugal.
- Countries at the bottom of the ladder are among the "partner economies" of the OECD, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan, and among the OECD countries, Mexico and Chile.
