Raï Star Cheb Mami Back on Stage
Algerian Raï star Cheb Mami made his comeback in Algiers Tuesday night after a long absence due to his imprisonment in France for violence against his ex-girlfriend.
- Cheb Mami has fired the opening of the summer with his old repertoire at the packed theater of the seaside town of Sid Fredj, 25 km west of Algiers.
Nearly two thousand people attended the first concert of the Prince of Rai organized in the Musical Eveningsproposed by the National Office of Culture and Information (NOCI).- "I missed you," said Mami to these his fans.
Cheb Mami, convicted in France for five years in prison in 2009 for assault on his ex-girlfriend, aphotojournalist of 43, was released on March 23.- His former campaign described being brought by force in August 2005 into a villa in Algiers after she had announced her pregnancy to the singer, who was opposed. She said she had been drugged and kidnapped, saying that two women and a man tried to make her curettage. She eventually gave birth to a girl now aged four.
After two years of flight in Algeria, the singer presented himself to justice; his career seemed at the time at a standstill.
