  • The leaders of G8 countries and African countries invited to the summit of L'Aquila announced Friday the strengthening of their partnership to improve access to water on the African continent.

The G8 and invited African countries (Algeria, Angola, Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and the African Union) said they were “concerned about the increasing scarcity of water resources and the drastic lack of sustainable water and sanitation systems in many African countries”, in a joint statement.

According to them, this is a major obstacle to sustainable development, wealth creation and poverty eradication on the continent.

“We are determined to build a stronger partnership between African countries and G8 to improve access to water and sanitation” to achieve “concrete results in the field,” they said.

The G8 countries in particular will help African countries build infrastructure to improve access to water.

They also commit themselves to “improve coordination with donors to ensure that aid is more effective and to ensure that the aid “better reflect national priorities.”

The G8 countries and African countries indicate that they will continue “to work to consolidate this cooperation in order to present a stronger partnership G8-Africa by the end of 2009 and will benefit from the week of the African Water be held in November in South Africa to move forward on the subject.
