Jijel: increase in fisheries production

Jijel (Algeria) - The fisheries production in the province of Jijel (359 km east of Algiers) reached 8,330 tonnes so far in 2009, local fisheries managers announced on Wednesday.

• This production, which includes marine and inland fisheries, has been estimated "three times higher" than in 1999, and is "double" that made in 2004, said Mohamed Zouaoui, the local fisheries and fishery resources director.

• The acquisition of new fishing units and the renovation of many boats are behind this increased production, he pointed out, adding that a dozen fishing units have been completely renovated and 156 others purchased since 1999.
