Algiers- The price of red meat will sharply drop next April under an agreement to be signed by a group of importers of this product with their Sudanese counterparts in the coming weeks. This agreement will contribute to stable prices throughout the year and put an end to the disturbances experienced by this vital food, especially during religious events.
- According to Mohamed Alioui, Secretary General of the National Farmers Union, in a statement yesterday to Ennahar, importers of red meat will make a visit to Khartoum, Sudan in order to conclude an agreement with the Union of Sudanese farmers, whereby there will be imports of fresh red meat, frozen meat and sheep. Knowing that Sudan has more than 147 million head.
Mr. Alioui added that imports will begin once the herd are subject to medical examination by the veterinary services of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to ensure against contagious diseases such as Maltese fever, blue tongue etc..
For the SG of the UNAA the project of importing red meat and livestock from Sudan backs to negotiations between the Union of Sudanese farmers who visited Algeria last January, and the National Union of Algerian Farmers who invited them.
The price of red meat on the market turns around 800 dinars/kg, very high compared with the stock available in the country, estimated at 20 million heads. As a result, the price will drop sharply as it will fall down to 400 AD next April and will be within the reach of middle class.
Algeria imported more than 93 million dollars of fresh and frozen meat from Argentina and Uruguay for the period from January to September 2009, against 170 million for the previous year .
The signing of this agreement with the Union of Sudanese farmers will reduce the import of meat of poor quality from those countries until the final stop in the future. -
