Algeria interested in continuing its gas exports to Turkey
ALGIERS - Algeria wants to continue its gas exports to Turkey after 2014, date of expiry of current contract between the Algerian state company Sonatrach and the Turkish company Botas said on Wednesday the Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines Chakib Khelil.
- "We express our determination to continue our business relationship (with Turkey) in the export of gas, and that beyond 2014, date of expiry of current contract between Sonatrach and Botas," said Khelil, quoted by APS at the opening of the 9th session of the Joint Committee Algerian-Turkish economic, scientific and technic cooperation.
He also called for increased exports to help balance the trade balance between the two countries.
The contract signed in 1995 with Turkey is for delivery by Algeria of 4 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year for a period of 20 years.
The volume of trade between Algeria and Turkey has reached over 3.8 billion dollars in 2009, putting Turkey's 6th largest customer of Algeria (2 billion U.S. dollars) and the 7th largest of its suppliers with 1.7 billion, according to figures of Algerian customs.
Turkish direct investments in Algeria are in the range of about 300 million dollars allocated in sectors including construction and public works and food, the source said.
The work of the 9th session of the Joint Committee, which will continue Thursday, are co-chaired by Mr. Khelil and Turkish State Minister responsible for Planning Cedvet Yilmaz.
