Algeria: fishing of bluefin tuna in 2010 prohibited to foreigners
ALGIERS - Algeria has decided to exclude "foreign operators" of the next fishing season for bluefin tuna in waters under its jurisdiction in favor of nationals, said Sunday the Algerian APS agency, quoting the Ministry of Fisheries.
- "From this year (2010), foreign operators are not allowed to participate in the commercial fishing season for bluefin tuna in waters under the jurisdiction of Algeria," said the ministry, which added that "This operation is reserved only for nationals".
This action follows the decision of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), which brings together States fishermen, "not to award the fishing of this species to other countries and each country must lower its quota using its own means ", said the Ministry of Fisheries.
Algeria gives fishing licenses of bluefin tuna from 1 to 31 May and a quota of 223.4 tonnes of freight was offered to foreign operators during the 2009 campaign, a total quota of 800 tonnes.
The Ministry of Fisheries said that the ban by Algeria to export this species depend on the decision of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which runs until March 25 to Dohar, adds APS.
A proposal submitted by the Principality of Monaco suggested the inclusion of bluefin tuna in Appendix I of CITES. If this proposal were adopted, exports / imports of bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) are completely prohibited until an observed recovery of populations.
