ALGIERS - Seven members of the body of social work in the steel unit of ArcelorMittal Annaba (East of Algeria), were convicted Tuesday and sentenced to 18 months suspended sentence to four years in prison for various embezzlement, said a court in El Hadjar.

  •    The seven leaders of the Participation Committee (PC), all members of the former team manager of this organization shelved in 2009, were prosecuted for "mismanagement, diversion and use of social work for personal purposes" after a collective complaint of more than 5,200 employees of the site of El Hajar in Annaba, eastern Algeria.
Four of them, including former President of PC, have been sentenced to four years in prison, and three years of detention to another leader.
Two defendants have received suspended sentences for 18 months.
The former auditor, accused of not having denounced these criminal acts, was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
The collective complaint had led an investigation into the management of social work of ArcelorMittal, run by unionists from the buyout by the company Ispat in October 2001 until May 2009, the team leader was dismissed from its functions.
The factory of El Hajar is a former Algerian state-owned bought 70% in October 2001 by the Indian Ispat, a company of the group Mittal.
The alleged amount of damages in the management of social funds would exceed 5 billion dinars (around 50 million Euros) according to the private Algerian press.
