Portuguese Prime Minister in North Africa to discuss energy
LISBON - Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates will begin a visit on Sunday to Libya, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco to participate in several high level meetings and sign agreements in the field of energy.
- According to his official program, Mr. Socrates will meet Sunday, Libyan President Muammar Qaddafi, before heading the day next to Algeria, where he will be received by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and will take part in a seminar on renewable energy.
Portugal wants to balance its trade balance with these two countries, which are among its major oil suppliers. Imports from Libya, for example, have reached 332.2 million Euros last year, against exports which were $ 35.4 million.
On Monday, the Portuguese prime minister arrives in Tunisia to participate with his counterpart Mohamed Ghannouchi at the second Luso-Tunisian summit, during which will be signed several cooperation agreements, particularly in the field of renewable energies.
Mr. Socrates will be received Tuesday by Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali before going to Morocco to meet with Prime Minister Abbas El Fassi.
