In response to a question from Ennahar daily on the union's position on wage increases in the public function decided by the Government, the Secretary General of General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) said that the Union which he represents, has kept all the promises made to workers.

  • Sidi Said reported yesterday in an interview with Ennahar, that reaching at a proposal to increase wages of workers in joint body whose number is 580,000 workers, and workers of National Education, was made possible with the seriousness with which the case was handled and also the dialogue and consultation. The Union, he said, has always claimed and still claims the adoption of dialogue in the discussion of these issues. "I promised the workers and I kept my promise. When there is concerted action, the result is always positive," he added.

  • 580,000 civil servants and contract staff will have their salaries upgraded. The decision was taken last May 15 by the government. The information was confirmed yesterday by the Director General of Public Service, Kharchi Djamel. It specifies that "the allowance systems once adopted have retroactive effect from 1 January 2008, and this irrespective of the date of their adoption. In other words, salary increases will come into force as soon as the decrees is published in the Official Journal, or within one month, while the financial windfall generated for this purpose is of the order of 140 billion dinars. The revision of the allowance system includes the common bodies of administrators, translators, interpreters, archivists, librarians, statisticians and computer engineers. This new regime has been strengthened by the creation of a new allowance plus performance bonus. These are 'the compensation of common administrative services "established for officials of general administration, documentation and archives, translation and interpreting economic analysts at rates ranging between 25% and 40% of new treatment.
