Raffarin Special Adviser on Franco-Algerian Economic Relations

Former Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin was appointed by President Sarkozy on a mission on economic cooperation between France and Algeria and development of investments in both countries, the Elysee said Wednesday.
- "This mission will seek to identify and remove obstacles between France and Algeria for their respective economic investments," said President of the Republic in a statement.
The issue of development of economic exchanges between the two countries had been particularly mentioned by the Secretary General of the Elysee Claude Gueant and Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, February 21 and June 20, during talks in Algiers.
"The two men agree on the opportunity to give both sides the monitoring of these relationships at a high level personality whose role would include coordinating the Franco-Algerian economic cooperation and the development of French investment in Algeria and Algerians in France, President Sarkozy wrote in his letter of assignment.
"Our country remains a leading economic partners of Algeria. However, no gain is definitly sure to keep as much as possible and we must increase our market positions," the President added referring to " difficulties" faced by some French companies operating in Algeria and which require outside support.
"In this context, the intervention of a person specifically responsible for bilateral economic relations will show our Algerian partners as to our business companies the willingness of France to provide tangible support to our presence in Algeria," says Mr. Sarkozy.
