Sonatrach and Gazprom have discovered hydrocarbon reserves
The Algerian state energy company Sonatrach and the Russian giant Gazprom announced Saturday they had uncovered hydrocarbon reserves in the Berkine Basin in Algeria, the first discovery for Gazprom in North Africa.
- This discovery was made following the drilling of Rhourde Sayah-2 well (RSH-2) in the perimeter of El Assel Berkine Basin 500 km south of Algiers, the statement said.
- The wells gave a flow of 60,000 cubic meters of gas per day and 49.38 tons per day of oil, the statement added.
- This is the first discovery of hydrocarbons in North Africa for Gazprom, said the latter.
- In October, during a visit by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in Algeria, Alexei Miller, Gazprom's boss, who accompanied him, had welcomed the successful discussions with Sonatrach.
- In 2008, Gazprom had opened a representative office in Algeria to develop its activities in Africa in partnership with Sonatrach.
- The perimeter El Assel was sold by Sonatrach in January 2009 to Gazprom operator on this contract up to 49% in partnership with the Algerian group (51%).
