USA-Maghreb Entrepreneurship, a 2-day conference in Algiers
ALGIERS, Algeria welcomed on Wednesday a conference focusing on partnerships between U.S. and North Africa to encourage entrepreneurship, seven months after a summit of Muslim entrepreneurs organized in Washington.
- "This meeting is a direct result of the Presidential Summit of the company held by Barack Obama in April in Washington," said Saturday the sub Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Jose W. Fernandez in an interview in Washington with the Algerian agency APS.
- The U.S. president had met end of April entrepreneurs of fifty Muslim countries for talks focused on economic development and unveiled a series of partnerships.
- The Algiers meeting, scheduled until Thursday, is part of "continuing work to encourage entrepreneurship and create regional partnerships," said Fernandez, who was expected Monday in Algiers to lead an official delegation and businessmen.
- Organized by the U.S. State Department, the conference will bring together local entrepreneurs, of the Maghreb countries (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania) and the U.S.
- This meeting is "an important step forward in promoting the culture of entrepreneurship in Algeria and the Maghreb, creating a more favorable business environment for the private sector," said Fernandez, who will visit Tunisia, Libya and Morocco after a four-day stay in Algiers.
- The top U.S. diplomat has held that business opportunities out of hydrocarbons in Algeria were "a huge potential for U.S. investors."
- The program director of global engagement at the National Security Council of the United States, Pradeep Ramamurthy, had said in July in Algiers that Washington wanted "to strengthen economic ties with Algeria and the Maghreb through a long term partnership but also to cooperation in science and health."
