Benmeradi: "Renault's new proposals seem interesting"
ALGIERS - The proposal by the French automaker Renault to build a plant in Algeria capable of producing 75,000 cars in four different models has been described as "acceptable" by the Algerian authorities.
- "The new proposals of Renault seem interesting" said Sunday the Algerian Minister of Industry, SMEs and investment promotion, Mohamed Benmeradi at a meeting organized by the government daily Al-Mujahid.
- He said Renault also agreed that Algeria is associated with the commercialization process of vehicles produced by the future plant. Renault has offered to "engage its vehicles in the Algerian market by 2012" but "it is still premature to speculate" on the launch date of the project, said the minister.
- The first proposal to produce 50,000 vehicles in two models was rejected by the government, "he said. "Renault," he explained, is back with new proposals. He has studied with much interest the expectations of the Algerian side. We believe that this view of Renault today the project is much more acceptable for us."
- Renault has also accepted our conditions for a rate of greater integration and commitments for this rate increases as far as the realization of the investment" the minister said.
- "We do expect an investment not just for a vehicles assembly plant we import and a dynamic part of this investment. In a first step Renault would come only with its label and its licenses, without investing in capital" he said.
- In addition to Renault, the German carmaker, Volkswagen, also wants to invest in Algeria, said Benmeradi." Today, Volkswagen is very insistent (investing in Algeria). We've had some interesting exchanges with this group," he said.
- "The French want to go very quickly, the Germans too. We, we take the time to examine all aspects" related to these projects, the minister said. A monitoring committee was set up by the government he added.
