At least 55 people were killed Friday by two suicide bombers close to a high place of Shi'a in Baghdad, new signs that Iraq plunges back into violence nine weeks of the planned withdrawal of U.S. troops in cities.

  •     The double attack took place around noon (09H00 GMT), shortly before the beginning of the great prayer of Friday, while the faithful went to the mausoleum of Imam Moussa al-Kadhim in the northern Baghdad.

"According to our data, 55 people were killed in the attack, including 20 Iranian pilgrims, and 125 were injured, including 80 Iranians, said an official of the Ministry of Defense.

An official of the Interior said that the attack, "committed in a market near the mausoleum " has, however, reported 60 dead, including 25 Iranians, and confirmed the casualties. "The majority of victims are people who would pray," he said.

This is the most deadly attack in Baghdad since March 2008 and the second attack in 24 hours against the Iranian pilgrims, who come by the hundreds of thousands each year to visit the holy places of Shi'ism in Iraq.
