Germany: Jugene, the most powerful computer in Europe
The most powerful computer in Europe, a supercomputer equivalent to 50,000 desktop computers will be put into service in Germany, announced Tuesday the German research center where it is installed.
- The machine, called Jugene (pronounced Eugene, in English), is capable of performing one million billion (one petaflop) operations per second.
This is the third most powerful in the world behind Roadrunner and Jaguar in the United States, said in a statement Kosta Schinarakis, from the research center Juelich, at the German-Dutch border.
The computer will be used in particular for research on batteries for electric cars, the origins of the universe and the weather.
In contrast to desktop computers, which generally contain a single processor, the supercomputer from the US IBM uses 295,000 parts distributed in 72 racks the size of a telephone cabin each. - Ennaharonline/ M. O.
