Italy: Red carpet rolled out for Gaddafi
The Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi arrived in Rome Wednesday for a three days ...historic... visit, his first in the former colonial power which will take place under high police surveillance, said an AFP photographer.
- The “guide” was greeted at the airport of Rome-Ciampino by the head of government Silvio Berlusconi who hopes to make this visit a diplomatic success after his narrow victory in the Europeans, due to a series of scandals.
Muammar Gaddafi planted his tent in the largest park in Rome, the Villa Doria Pamphili.
This visit was made possible by the signing in August 2008 of a treaty that should settle the accounts of more than thirty years of Italian colonization in Libya (1911-1942).
