Frozen babies case: 10 years in prison required against
France - The attorney general Wednesday called for ten years in prison against Veronique Courjault, the French tried for a week in Tours (centre) for three infanticide of newborns, two in Seoul and one in France.
“Do not demonize Véronique Courjault, neither make of her an icon” asked Philippe Varin. The defendant, aged 41, remained impassive to the announcement of the requisitions. Tried for “murder”, she faces life imprisonment.
The verdict will be delivered Thursday evening after the arguments of the defence.
Infanticides were committed during the summer of 1999 in France, in September 2002 and December 2003 in Seoul where the husband of Veronica Courjault, an engineer, worked for an American company.
The discovery in August 2006 by the husband of two bodies of newborn babies in the freezer of the family home in Seoul had triggered the case, which had a strong impact in France and highlighted the phenomenon of “denial of pregnancy”.
