Western Sahara: the quest for a solution ...on track...
ALGIERS - The United Nations envoy for Western Sahara Christopher Ross thought that finding a solution to the conflict in Western Sahara was on the "right path", after an interview Wednesday in Algiers with the President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
- “I think we are on track to make the next step in finding a solution to this big question,” said to the press Mr. Ross cited by the Algerian APS agency.
Mr. Ross described as “very good” the discussions with Mr Bouteflika during which were discussed “a lot of aspects to the situation in the region, including of course the question of Western Sahara,” he said.
The negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front, which began in June 2007 under the auspices of the United Nations, have failed.
Former Spanish colony, Western Sahara was annexed in 1975 by Morocco, which offers a wide autonomy under its sovereignty, not independence.
The Polisario demands a referendum on self-determination in which independence would be one of the options.
