Al-Qaeda claimed the assassination of an American in Mauritania
DUBAI - The North African branch of Al-Qaida claimed Friday responsibility for the murder of an American Tuesday in Nouakchott, in a statement quoted by the Central American Islamist site monitoring SITE Intelligence.
- In his statement, Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (AQMI) announces its responsibility for the murder of Christopher Logest accused of engaging in evangelization activities.
The North African branch of Al-Qaida also threatens to launch further attacks against the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama because it pursues the same policy as that of George W. Bush with the Muslim world.
It further calls on the Mauritanians to go to Jihad (holy war) against the “crusaders” and to support the jihad of Al Qaeda in their country.
The U.S. national was killed in front of the language and computer school he managed.
According to the Mauritanian Ministry of the Interior, “the heinous crime was perpetrated by two young people arrived on board a vehicle, who fired fatal gunshots to the head of the victim.”
The victim had been residing for several years in Nouakchott, according to witnesses.
In late 2007, four French people were murdered in Aleg (250 km east of the capital), where three young Mauritanians close to Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb are currently detained, awaiting trial.
