MADRID- The United Nations envoy for Western Sahara, Christopher Ross, met Tuesday evening with the Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos at the end of his second tour in the region.

  •     Mr Moratinos has “reiterated the support of Spain to a just, lasting and mutually acceptable settlement which respects the principle of self-determination within the framework of Security Council resolutions of the UN,” according to a statement released Wednesday by his ministry.

He congratulated Mr. Ross for his active role since his appointment in January. The UN envoy has also informed the Spanish Minister of contacts aimed at resuming the negotiating process launched in June 2007 in Manhasset (United States).

Christopher Ross had said Monday in Rabat to be “optimistic” about the organization of a first informal meeting between Morocco and the Polisario Front to discuss the future of Western Sahara, after having held talks in Algiers, Tindouf and Nouakchott.
