TUNIS- A fourth case of swine influenza A (H1N1) was diagnosed in Tunisia in Sfax (250 km south of Tunis)

  • A fourth case of swine influenza A (H1N1) was diagnosed in Tunisia in Sfax (250 km south of Tunis) in an infant who arrived with his parents from Canada, said the National Observatory for the new emerging diseases.

        Having fever three days after his return to Tunisia in early July, the baby of ten months was admitted last Saturday to the Central Hospital of Sfax, where the presence of influenza A (H1N1) was confirmed, said a physician member of the Centre under the Ministry of Health.

        “The child has been subjected to antiviral therapy and is doing well,” said Dr. Hedi Elbaz, stating that analyzes made on his parents were negative.

        “The precautionary measures were strictly enforced to prevent contamination in the family and in the medical community,” he said.

        The child, who we do not know how he was contaminated, left the hospital to be followed at the home by his parents, Tunisians from Sfax and residing in Canada.

        This is the first appearance of the virus in regions of Tunisia, the first case was revealed Tuesday by the private daily Assabah.

        Three cases of influenza A (H1N1) have been made in Tunisia, the first two announced on 22 June involved two students arrived from the United States, the 3rd having been detected in a hostess who returned from a mission in Saudi Arabia.
