      “I had a note yesterday (Monday) saying the note was still not found, since it is dated of a dozen years,” said Minister of Defense on RTL radio.
  
      “This is a note that was not transmitted to the Quai d'Orsay (Foreign Affairs), which was forwarded to the Directorate of Military Intelligence. I asked the services to try to find this note,” he said.
  
      Mr. Morin was asked about the recent revival of this issue following the testimony of General François Buchwalter, former French Defense Attaché in Algiers before the anti-terrorism judge in charge of investigating the case in 1996.
  
      According to the officer, who said having this information from an Algerian military who held it himself from his brother, a helicopter pilot in the Algerian army, the Cistercian monks were killed by Algerian military helicopters shelling, which had opened fire on what appeared to be a jihadi camp.
  
      This version contradicts the official version that the religious were executed by the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) two months after their abduction in their monastery.
