Germany: 8 years in prison for letting her child die of hunger

BERLIN- A German woman of 25 was sentenced Wednesday in Chemnitz (East) to eight years in prison for leaving her two-year old son to die of hunger and thirst in December 2007.

  •     The court of Chemnitz was convicted of homicide for having abandoned the little Robin, sick for almost three days just before Christmas in her apartment, leaving him only a few food cakes and a flask, has indicated a spokesperson.

The mother was staying during that time with friends, with her second son. Upon her return from Christmas, she found the child in a tragic state of health, but did not call the emergency services. A doctor had established Robin's death two days later.

The award shall be applicable, neither the defence nor the prosecution had wanted to appeal.

In July 2008 the mother had already been sentenced to five years in prison by the court in Zwickau (East). But the Federal Supreme Court had quashed the ruling and ordered a new trial, finding it necessary to reconsider the matter in terms of premeditation.

The Chemnitz court found that there had been no murder or premeditated murder, but the mother was aware of a risk of death for her son when she left.
