KABUL- Four U.S. soldiers from the NATO force were killed in a bomb explosion in southern Afghanistan, said NATO.

  •     These four deaths already make the year 2009 the deadliest year for foreign troops in Afghanistan since late 2001.

Four soldiers from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) were killed today by a bomb in southern Afghanistan, "ISAF said in a statement without specifying either the circumstances or the exact location where the soldiers were killed. Southern Afghanistan is a Taliban stronghold.

The text specifies that the victims were American soldiers who comprise the vast majority of international forces in Afghanistan.

The soldiers were on patrol "in one of the most violent zones" in the country, the statement said.

The deaths bring to 63 the number of foreign soldiers killed in Afghanistan in August and 295 since the beginning of the year.

The uprising of Taliban and other groups of Islamist fighters has greatly intensified and expanded geographically during the past two years.
