Morocco: The editor of a newspaper questioned by police

RABAT - The director and editor of the daily Al Jarida Al Oula was heard Wednesday by police, following the recent publication of an article on the health of King Mohammed VI, according to a judicial source and to the newspaper.

  •     The prosecutor in Rabat on Tuesday ordered the opening of a "thorough investigation" on Ali Anouzla, editor of the Arabic daily Al Jarida Al Oula, following the publication, on August 27 of an article entitled "the King's illness postponed his religious talks and movement to Casablanca," according to a statement by the prosecutor.

        According to prosecutors, the article "contains false facts and false information concerning the health of His Majesty the King," which are "totally unfounded".

        The statement added that the newspaper" based on anonymous sources, contrary to the truth contained in the official statement signed by personal physician" of the king.

        Moreover, according to the Moroccan news agency MAP, the personal physician of the king informed the president of the Medical Council about this article which is based on an anonymous source containing baseless medical information and allegations."

        Contacted by AFP, the deputy editor of Al Jarida Al Oula, Jari Omar, confirmed the hearing of Ali Anouzla by police in Rabat.
