Egypt: Four Sub-Saharan killed while trying to enter Israel
El-Arish (Egypt) - The Egyptian border guards have shot dead four African migrants from sub-Sahara Tuesday night while they were trying to enter illegally into Israel, according to an official in Egyptian security.
- The four men were caught by border guards while trying to cross a dam of barbed wire marking the border with Israel in the southern town of Rafah, said the official, who requested anonymity.
"They tried to flee and were killed by bullets," he said, adding that two Ethiopian migrants were also injured, one seriously.
Another man belonging to the same group was arrested, he further said.
Four migrants killed didn’t have identity papers and their nationality could not be established immediately, said the official.
This is the deadliest incident on the border between Egypt and Israel.
The Egyptian border guards killed eight migrants attempting to cross the border this year and at least 28 in 2008.
The long border of 250 km between the two countries has become a major transit zone for migrants, asylum seekers or drug traffickers against whom Israel has asked Egypt to crack down.
Organizations defending human rights raised against the Egyptian policy which consists of shooting on migrants. The latter say they want to escape poverty and racism.
