France/ Immigration: Sarkozy opposes DNA tests

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Wednesday he approved the suspension of the implementation of DNA testing for family reunification, previously considered a key element of his policy of controlling immigration.

  •     "The DNA test is useless. It's stupid," said the head of state during the weekly cabinet meeting, according to government sources.

Nicolas Sarkozy has confirmed his support for the Immigration Minister, Eric Besson, a former Socialist, who had estimated Sunday that the implementation of DNA testing was technically impossible, incurring the wrath of the parliamentary majority and compliments of associations.

Mr Sarkozy, however, criticized the way Mr. Besson has announced a postponement of implementing decrees. "We should not tell members of the parliament that we will not enforce their laws," he said, according to the same sources.

Tuesday, Nicolas Sarkozy had already, before the members of his party, clearly distanced himself on this part of the law on controlling immigration voted in 2007.

The Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux, in the heart of a controversy for comments he considered displaced on the North African community, was Minister of Immigration in the vote on this disposal by a proposed of a member of the majority.

The text had been watered down of its parliamentary term, amid protests and petitions from the left and various associations.

He predicted that DNA tests would be conducted at the request of the prospective migrant worker in France, at state expense, and would be subject to the decision of a judge, leading many observers to predict a very difficult application .

From a humanitarian perspective, our fellow human beings, who migrate to support their families, continue to suffer at the hands of immigration policies that separate them from family members. This suffering should not continue.

Now is the time to address this pressing humanitarian issue which affects so many lives and undermines basic human dignity. Our society should no longer tolerate a status quo that perpetuates a permanent underclass of persons and benefits from their labor without offering them legal protections.
