Italy: A Honor crime

A Moroccan man living in northern Italy, opposed to the relationship of his Muslim daughter of 18 with an Italian Catholic 31, killed Tuesday the young woman and wounded the young man reported Wednesday the Italian press.

•     Dafani El Ketawi, 45, assistant cook in the area of Pordenone in north-eastern Italy, intercepted the car of the young Italian Massimo De Biasio, where was also his daughter Sanaa.
  
      "The two youths were attacked immediately. Massimo De Biasio has not even had time to leave the car where he was hit by multiple stab wounds. Sanaa has sought instead to flee but was hit few meters away by a series of stab wounds at the throat," said the daily La Repubblica.
  
      According to witnesses cited by the newspaper, the Moroccan had threatened of death on several occasions the young Italian who lived for several weeks now with Sanaa.
  
      "It is a horrible crime, inhuman, inconceivable, the result of a war of religions is absurd that even came into our homes," said on Wednesday the Minister of Equal Opportunities Mara Carfagna.
  
      "The terrible events like this one encourage us to continue to integrate immigrants according to the Italian model, where each person is free to profess his own faith, but can not stay in the country unless he accepts the rules, which respect for human rights, including those of women and laws of the state, "concluded the minister.
  
      Luigi Delpino, prosecutor of Pordenone, Wednesday told reporters that Dafani El Ketawi risks life imprisonment because of aggravating circumstances, the relationship with the victim, but he refused to confirm the religious motives of the crime.
  
      This murder reminds of another young Muslim girl in Italy, Hina, killed in August 2006 by her father and two cousins who disapproved of her lifestyle deemed too "Westernized".
  
      Hina's body was buried in the garden of the family home. His killers were sentenced to 30 years imprisonment by the Italian courts.
