Copenhagen rejects a new vote on the first mosque in Denmark
- The Copenhagen city council has rejected a request for a new vote made by the extreme right to prevent the construction of the first mosque in Denmark, said Friday Klaus Bondam, deputy mayor in charge of the environment.
- The Danish People's Party (PPD) has claimed another debate and another vote on the Shiite mosque in which the plan was adopted by a large majority in late August by the Board, after learning that Iran would provide a great of its funding.
"I am satisfied with the rejection of this request at a board meeting Thursday night, which clearly expresses our desire not to endorse the policy of harassment of Muslims by the PPD in this city," said Bondam to the press.
The green light from the mayor of August 27, focuses on the development plan of the place of the future mosque, which must be sent to local residents including the opinion before the final approval of construction," he said.
"We must show tolerance that Muslims have their mosques as Christians and Jews have their churches and synagogues," he said, denouncing the recent "disgusting" media campaign PPD against places of Muslim worship.
PPD, vital parliamentary support of the Liberal-Conservative government, called on voters to express their opposition to the construction of mosques, these "citadels of Islam," calling for a referendum on this issue.
Islam, with some 200,000 followers (about 3.5% of the population), is the second religion in Denmark after the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Muslims, mostly Sunni Muslims, practice their religion in nearly 130 places of worship located in apartments, basements and abandoned factories.
