KABUL - NATO's military suffered the heaviest casualties in over a year in Afghanistan with the death Saturday of eight U.S. soldiers in fighting in the east, bordering tribal areas where network elements Al-Qaeda and Taliban hide.

  •     "We can confirm that they are all Americans," declared to AFP the spokesman for the NATO force (ISAF) contacted by telephone shortly after the announcement of the death of eight NATO soldiers.

U.S. soldiers deployed in the province of Nuristan, which borders Pakistan, belonged to the "Task Force Mountain Warrior", a regiment of light infantry.

According to ISAF, the Taliban have launched Saturday morning attacks against international forces from a mosque and a village in Nuristan.

"The fighting continues and reinforcements were sent up," said Sunday Mohammad Farooq, the deputy police commander of the province.

The "Taliban", numbering about 700, came from Swat and Dir, Pakistan, he said.

Thirteen policemen were missing in the region of Kamdesh, very close to the border, Farooq added.

ISAF has also announced the deaths of two Afghan soldiers.
