A H1N1: 91 dead in South Africa
JOHANNESBURG - The H1N1 continues to spread in South Africa, where it has killed 91 people and made nearly 12,300 patients, said Friday the National Institute of Communicable Disease (NICD).
- Most victims were weakened by chronic illness, pregnancy, youth or old age, the NICD said.
The rate of infection is likely to slow, as South Africa enters the hot season, said the institute.
The NICD reported on 25 septembre 59 fatal cases and over 11,500 people infected in South Africa, where the first case was detected June 18 and the first death announced August 3.
Globally, the H1N1 flu has killed more than 4,000 people since the emergence of new viruses in March-April this year, according to WHO data.
