Eleven died in the crash of a UN plane in Haiti
- "The UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti announced with sadness that a plane of MINUSTAH, carrying on board 11 passengers, including crew, crashed southeast of the town of Ganthier near Fond Verrettes, around noon (5:00 pm GMT), the mission said in a statement.
The UN did not provide details on victims, but according to Haitian police sources these are Uruguayan and Jordanian nationalities.
"A rescue team sent by the MINUSTAH has found no survivors at the scene of the accident," according to the communiqué. From the same source, "the cause of the accident is yet unknown and investigation procedures in case of an aircraft accident are underway.
An earlier review of Haitian police source reported six dead.
The aircraft, a CASA 212, belonged to the Uruguayan contingent of MINUSTAH. It "was on a reconnaissance flight" at the time of the tragedy, according to the UN.
Established in June 2004, MINUSTAH has around 11,000 personnel including 7,000 soldiers and 2,000 policemen.
