Threat of Al-Qaeda: Abu Yahia al-Libi calls Uighurs for jihad

  •     "The Chinese government is fully confident and has the ability to maintain national security, people's lives and safety of property," he said the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ma Zhaoxu.

The latter responded to the call by Abu Yahia al-Libi, considered the number three of Al-Qaeda after Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri, and revealed Thursday by the U.S. center monitoring Islamist websites SITE Thursday.

"Our brothers Turkestan (the name given by the Islamists to the Autonomous Region of Xinjiang) know that there is no salvation or a means of putting an end to oppression and injustice than by a real return to faith and seriously preparing for jihad," he declared, according to SITE.

In his message of nine minutes, he discussed at length the situation of Uighurs living in Xinjiang (northwest China), claiming that they suffer from political discrimination.

In his statement Saturday, the Chinese spokesman assured that Xinjiang enjoyed" a policy of religious freedom and equality for minorities."

"We continue to cooperate with the international community to respond jointly to the terrorist threat," added Ma.

In July, riots broke out in Xinjiang after a demonstration calling for the light on the murder of two Uighurs in southern China, according to Uighur dissidents in exile.

The Chinese court has sentenced Saturday to the death penalty one of the authors of the murders, a gesture that could be seen as a measure of appeasement towards the Uighur community.

The authorities have accused the separatists of instigating the unrest that has been followed by reprisals from Hans majority community, and accounts for 197 deaths, mostly Hans, according to them. Hundreds of people were arrested. Tension remains high in Xinjiang after the riots.
