Saudi Arabia: Creation of a new Human Rights association
- The 11 activists sent a statement Sunday night to King Abdullah on the creation of the Association for Civil and Political Rights, said one of them, Mohammed al-Qahtani, a professor of political science.
He said security services had already started asking questions about the signers of the declaration.
"The idea is to form an association that defends the civil and political rights," said Mr Qahtani.
He estimated that the country was "now open, at least in the official rhetoric," citing the "program of national dialogue" initiated by the King and the recent opening of a university of high-technology which practises Coeducation for the first time in the Kingdom.
The statement indicates that the Association intends to fight against violations of human rights, more and more frequent since the Gulf War of 1990.
The Association will also address the root causes of violent attacks inside the kingdom, including attacks by Al-Qaeda between 2003 and 2005.
Mr. Qahtani said that his association, which is completely independence, would conduct studies on political and social issues and make them public.
"Everything that goes wrong in our society has a relationship with the political system," he said, explaining that his group had sent the statement to the king because he "has full authority."
The group called in its statement the government to adopt the law on NGOs, long awaited and which is likely to give a legal existence.
