Visit of Egyptian intelligence chief in Israel
Israel- Egyptian intelligence Chief Omar Suleiman was to meet Sunday with the main leaders of Israel, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the Israeli media.
- Omar Suleiman must also meet President Shimon Peres, Defence Minister Ehud Barak and the chief of Mossad, the Israeli intelligence, Meir Dagan, said army radio.
Questioned by AFP, a spokesman for Mr. Netanyahu has refused to give any details on the visit of Omar Suleiman.
The Egyptian official will particularly discuss ways to prevent trafficking of weapons and ammunition through tunnels linking Egypt to the Ghaza Strip, controlled by the Palestinian Hamas, the radio added.
Foreign Minister of Egypt Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Saturday confirmed implicitly constructing a subsurface steel barrier at the border between his country and the Ghaza Strip.
Omar Suleiman is also expected to discuss the status of negotiations for the release of Franco-Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in exchange for a thousand Palestinian prisoners.
Israel and Hamas are engaged in indirect talks sponsored by Egypt with the help of a German mediator, to release the soldier abducted in June 2006 on the edge of the Ghaza Strip by Palestinian commandos and detained since by Hamas.
Conflicting reports have circulated in recent weeks about an impending agreement.
