Israeli police operation in a Palestinian camp in East Jerusalem
The Israeli security forces have proceeded Monday to the arrest of 11 Palestinians in the refugee camp of Shufat in East Jerusalem as part of a major police operation, said a spokesman for the police.
- Dozens of police and Israeli border-guards intervened shortly after midnight with jeeps in the refugee camp, north of the occupied East Jerusalem, reported the spokesman for the police Shmuel Ben Rubi and witnesses.
Those arrested are suspected of tax evasion, failure to pay to the municipality and to be involved in "criminal activities and violent threats to public order," said the spokesman.
He said the operation would last "as long as necessary".
Israel occupied and annexed East Jerusalem in the wake of the Six Day War in 1967, but that annexation was never recognized by the international community. - The Jewish state considers Jerusalem as its capital "indivisible" while the Palestinians want East Jerusalem the capital of their state.
