King of Morocco calls for resolving "artificial dispute" of the Sahara

GRANADA (Spain) - King Mohammed VI of Morocco on Sunday called in a message sent at the EU-Morocco to a "political settlement of artificial conflict" on the Western Sahara on the basis of the Moroccan proposal for autonomy for the "region ".

  •    Morocco "calls upon other parties to respond to the call of the Security Council (UN, editor's note) and commit to a political settlement to the artificial dispute concerning territorial integrity on the basis of initiative providing the Moroccan Sahara region greater autonomy under the sovereignty of the kingdom (Moroccan editor's note), its national unity and territorial integrity, "according to the message of which AFP has had a copy.
       Rabat considers the Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony annexed in 1975, and a part of the kingdom and has proposes a considerable autonomy under its sovereignty.
       The Polisario Front, supported particularly by Algeria, on the other hand requires a referendum for self-determination including the option of independence.
       In his message written in French, the Moroccan monarch - who does not attend the first summit between the EU and Morocco - "reiterates his commitment to a credible and serious revival of the North African construction and building a common future based on respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and rules of good neighborliness. "
       The first summit between the EU and Morocco, who won in 2008 the EU "advanced status" that claimed since 2004, takes place this weekend in Granada (southern Spain) with the program discussions, including Western Sahara, the Union for the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
       The delegation was led by Moroccan Prime Minister Abbas El Fassi. European side, at the meeting the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, Commission President José Manuel Barroso, head of the Spanish Government Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos.
