Saudi: Turkish Prime Minister awarded for "services rendered to Islam"
RIYADH - King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has awarded Tuesday Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan one of the most prestigious decorations in the kingdom for "services rendered to Islam".
- Mr Erdogan was awarded King Faisal International prize for "outstanding services rendered to Islam", by "defending the cause of the Islamic nation, especially the Palestinian cause and the rights of the Palestinian people," said Abdallah al Outhaimine-general secretary of the committee awarding the prize.
"Worldwide, he was one of the Muslim founders of the call to relations between civilizations and a passionate advocate of constructive dialogue, openness and the principles of cooperation and international understanding", he added.
Seven researchers were also awarded the King Faisal prize in other categories.
The Algerian Abderrahmane Elhaj-Saleh and Lebanese Ramzi Baalbaki will share the prize « Languages and Literature » for their work on linguistics and Arabic grammar. The German Reinhold Ganz and Canadians Jean-Pierre Pelletier and Johanne Martel Pelletier were distinguished in the category « Medicine » for their work on osteo-arthritis.
The winners receive, besides a gold medal of 200 grams, $ 200,000. The co-winners share the money. - Ennaharonline/ M. O.
