Powerful 6.6 earthquake east of the large Japanese island of Honshu
TOKYO - An earthquake of magnitude 6.6, according to the U.S. Geological Survey USGS, occurred Sunday around 5:00 a.m. (08:00 GMT) east of the large Japanese island of Honshu, but no tsunami warning has been triggered.
- The earthquake occurred at 51 km depth, said the American Institute, and shook all of northern and central island of Honshu. Its epicenter was located a few tens of kilometers offshore, and about 300 km from Tokyo, where the quake was also felt.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has not triggered a tsunami warning, although it warned that the sea might be slightly rough in surface, without serious consequence it said.
