Egypt / Weather: Ports closed and traffic slowed on the Suez Canal
Ismailia (Egypt) - Four ports on the Egyptian Red Sea were closed Sunday and traffic on the Suez Canal was at a historic low because of high winds and sandstorms, channel authorities said.
- They have issued a bulletin warning for ships to take the canal linking the Red Sea to the Mediterranean and only 26 boats had taken it in the day, the lowest traffic recorded in 20 years.
In 2009, an average of 47 vessels crossed the canal daily.
Because of wind and wave height, four ports on the Red Sea, Suez, El Adabia, Zaytiya el, el-Sahana) have been closed, added the port authorities.
The late winter and early spring in Egypt are generally marked by storms due to a sandstorm, the Khamsin, which blows from the confines of the desert towards the eastern Mediterranean.
