SUVA - A powerful cyclone hit on Monday north of Fiji damaging many houses and crops and causing the evacuation of thousands of people into shelters, said the Office of Disaster Management.

  •    Cyclone Tomas is category four on a scale of one to five (for the strongest). It is accompanied by winds of an average speed of 170 kilometers per hour which would go to 205 kph in 12 to 24 hours, announced the meteorological services of the archipelago (FMS).
No casualties were reported yet outside of a woman who drowned during the weekend in the raging sea.
The Fiji archipelago has a little less than one million inhabitants.
