Egypt: an Israeli and a migrant arrested at the border

CAIRO - Egyptian police have arrested an Israeli man posing as a journalist who tried to cross the border between Egypt and Israel along with a Ghanaian migrant, said on Monday an official from Egyptian security services.

  •    The two men were arrested Sunday night south of the Rafah terminal, the official said.
The Israeli, aged 30, said to have entered from Taba in Egypt in order to do a newspaper report on African migrants attempting to illegally cross the border between Egypt and Israel.
He presented with hand injuries after apparently trying to break through the border fence between the two countries. He was treated at the hospital in Rafah and is currently questioned by security services.
The border, 250 km long between the two countries, has become a major transit zone for migrants, asylum seekers or drug traffickers against whom Israel has asked Egypt to crack down.
The Israeli government on Sunday approved the construction of a security fence along the border, which is currently enclosed by a fence rough and porous to prevent the infiltration of illegal immigrants.
Egyptian police regularly opened fire on migrants. Nineteen of them were slaughtered in 2009, and nine since the beginning of the year.
