Conspiracy against a Swedish cartoonist: two men jailed
DUBLIN - an Algerian and a Libyan, arrested in Ireland as part of an investigation into a conspiracy to assassinate a Swedish cartoonist who caricatured Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) with a dog's body had been indicted for crimes and jailed, according to RTE.
- Ali Sharaf Damache, Algerian, 44, was charged with threatening phone calls, while Abdul Salam Monsour Khalil Al-Jahani, Libya 33, was for violation of immigration rules, said RTE. Both men were remanded in custody until they appear again on Friday, according to public broadcaster.
Both were among a group of seven people arrested March 9 in Ireland as part of an investigation into a plot to assassinate Lars Vilks, a Swedish cartoonist who caricatured the prophet Muhammad (PBUH). A group linked to al-Qaeda has offered a reward of $ 100,000 for his assassination.
Three women and two men arrested at the same time were gradually released, the latest, a Croat, who was released Thursday - without being charged immediately.
A police source had told AFP that three members of the group were of Algerian nationality, the others being of Libyan, Palestinian, American and Croatian nationalities. Police said all are Muslim.
The suspects could be held for one week after their arrest without charge. Police said preparing files on those released, not excluding future indictments.
A satirical drawing by Lars Vilks, depicting the prophet with a dog's body had been published by a newspaper in the region of Örebro, west of Stockholm, August 18, 2007, to illustrate an editorial on the importance of freedom of expression, sparking a controversy soon in Sweden and abroad.
The publication in September 2005 by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten of cartoons of the prophet had led in January and February 2006 an outbreak of violence in the Muslim world and a boycott of Danish products. - Ennaharonline/ M. O.
