Clashes between Palestinians and hundreds of police
Clashes erupted Tuesday between hundreds of Palestinian youths and police in several Israeli neighborhoods in East Jerusalem, witnesses said. In the refugee camp of Shufat, protesters threw stones and police Israeli border guards who responded by firing stun grenades and rubber bullets.
- No injuries were immediately reported.
- At least one Palestinian was arrested by the police who restored calm after entering the camp, according to an AFP photographer.
Clashes continued into early morning in Issawiyeh, a predominantly Palestinian area of East Jerusalem, where police and border guards fired to disperse the demonstrators.
Clashes also took place in the Wadi Joz neighborhood in East Jerusalem of Arab majority annexed in 1967.
Israeli police were deployed in large numbers to deal with any overflow in East Jerusalem, where the politico-religious tensions are running high for weeks.
