Avian influenza H5N1 detected in Romania
BRUSSELS - A poultry farm in Romania has been infected by avian influenza H5N1, the first recorded case in the EU in one year, said Tuesday the European Commission.
- The affected farm is located in the town of Letea, near the Ukrainian border.
Preventive measures were taken immediately, as the slaughter of poultry and the establishment of a protection zone with a radius of 3 km around the farm, and a surveillance zone with a radius of 10 km considered "high risk".
The last confirmed case of bird flu had been detected in a wild duck in Germany in March 2009.
