Egypt: New arrests in the ranks of Muslim Brotherhood
Cairo - Fifteen members of the Muslim Brotherhood were arrested Tuesday for allegedly participating in the weekend in a demonstration of solidarity with Palestinians against Israeli measures in East Jerusalem, according to an official of security services.
- The arrests took place in the province of Sharqiyah (Nile Delta), following clashes that opposed security forces to hundreds of students including 15, also members of the Muslim Brotherhood, were arrested during a demonstration at the University of Cairo.
The Muslim Brotherhood, the main opposition force in Egypt, had called for demonstrations across the country to protest against plans by Israel to expand settlements in annexed east Jerusalem and subscribe to its heritage two holy places of West Bank.
Friday, nearly 50 Muslim Brotherhood members were arrested while participating in demonstrations for Jerusalem in several governorates.
The Muslim Brotherhood is officially banned as a political party but relatively tolerated in practice, even if their members are regularly arrested.
They had made a historic breakthrough in the legislative elections of 2005, winning a fifth of the parliamentary seats with MPs labelled "independent".
