CAIRO - Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak named Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed al-Tayeb new imam of Al-Azhar, after the death of the head of this higher education institution in Sunni Islam, reported Friday the official agency Mena.

  •    President Mubarak, recovering in Germany after surgery, "issued a decree appointing Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed al-Tayeb at the head of Al-Azhar," says Mena.
Mr. Tayeb, president of the University of Al-Azhar in Cairo, since 2003, succeeds Sheikh Mohamed Sayed Tantawi, who died of a heart attack March 10 in Saudi Arabia.
